Monitoring Rabies Vaccination – Phase IV

The project “Monitoring Rabies Vaccination – Phase IV” (MRV-IV) for Albania is financed by the European Union. The project started in May 2022 and the duration is 30 months. The project is implemented by the consortium AGT International, NIRAS and ISZV.

The overall objective of the MRV-IV project is to contribute to the complete eradication of rabies from Albania and the Western Balkans.

The goals of the project are:
(i) ensure that the implementation of oral rabies vaccination is carried out in full compliance with international standards;
(ii) establish rabies surveillance capacity by competent national authorities.
Immunity in foxes will be achieved by implementing three oral rabies vaccination campaigns and the role of the project is to ensure that the vaccination campaigns are implemented in accordance with international standards.
To create rabies surveillance plans, a series of actions will be implemented, such as the preparation of the conceptual structure of rabies surveillance, legal support, strengthening of laboratory capacities, public awareness, as well as an intensive training program for stakeholders.

Although it is a relatively small project, it is complex and requires a multisectoral approach, close cooperation and strong coordination of many competent national authorities. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is the main beneficiary of the project and has a leading role to ensure its implementation.
