BASIC EDUCATION

Compulsory basic education aims to develop the intellectual, creative, practical and physical abilities of students, to develop their personality and equip them with the basic elements of general culture and civic education.

Compulsory basic education begins at age 6 and lasts 9 years. The student is obliged to attend basic education until the age of 16. Basic education is unified. Its institutions are spread over the entire territory of the Republic of Albania. Citizens who reach the age of 16, but who do not manage to complete basic education, can complete it in short-time schools.
Basic education consists of two cycles: Primary Cycle, (grades I-V) and Lower Secondary Cycle, (grades VI-IX).
The education of students with disabilities takes place in special schools, in special classes within normal schools or integrated in normal classes.

SECONDARY EDUCATION

Secondary education is not compulsory.
Secondary education in the Republic of Albania consists of Gymnasiums (full-time and part-time) as well as Vocational Secondary Schools.
Full-time high schools. Public gymnasiums provide a general culture that is an expansion of knowledge and a deepening of the culture and knowledge acquired in basic education schools. The duration of high school is 3 years and ends with the State Matura exams.
The new high school structure and the new curriculum were implemented for the first time in the 2009-2010 school year.
The curriculum includes nine areas such as: Arts, Physical Education and Sports, Foreign Language (or foreign languages), Albanian Language and Literature, Career and Life Skills, Mathematics, Technology & ICT, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences.
The high school curriculum is composed of core curriculum and elective curriculum. Short-term gymnasiums also serve for the education of adults.
The duration of studies in short-term gymnasiums is 4 years and they end with the passing of the State Matura (MSH) exams. The curriculum and curricular programs are approved by the Minister of Education and Sports.
