Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs

The Central European Initiative (CEI) unites countries and their institutions in the spirit of regional cooperation in all areas of the economy, and not only, being both pragmatic and flexible. This initiative, created on November 11, 1989, today consists of 18 member countries: Albania, Austria, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Macedonia, Montenegro, Moldova, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Ukraine.

The object of the Initiative is to deepen the cooperation between the countries of the region, in the political and economic field, as well as to ensure good neighborly relations, within the integration processes. This initiative aims to integrate the economies of these countries in Europe, with the aim of their imminent membership in the European Union.

Albania, as a member country of the NEQ initiative since 1996, tries to play an active role in it. In 2006, Albania held the next Presidency of the NEQ. This was an important event for our foreign policy and for the visibility of our country and our organizational capacities, which confirmed the active role of our country in regional cooperation processes.

A special place in this initiative is occupied by the projects that are financed by various NEQ instruments. As a result of a good coordination work of the MFA, it has become possible for the projects presented by the Albanian subjects to receive a financing of about 3,225,993 Euros. These projects cover different fields, such as culture, environment, art, science, etc.
