BILATERAL RELATIONS BETWEEN ALBANIA AND GEORGIA

Georgia is situated at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. Georgia is situated in the Eastern European region of South Caucasus. In the southeast, it has a border with Azerbaijan, in the south with Armenia and Turkey, and in the north with Russia. The western part of Georgia meets the Black Sea, which connects Georgia physically to the European Union. The ancient capital of Georgia, Tbilisi, was founded in the fifth century. Georgia comprises a total area of 69,700 square kilometres, with a population of 3,720,000. The country regained its independence in 1991. Georgia is a representative democracy governed as a unitary parliamentary republic. Tbilisi is its capital as well as its largest city, and is home to roughly a third of the Georgian population.

OVERVIEW

Diplomatic relation between Albania and Georgia were established on July 8, 1993. Bilateral relations between the two countries are active within international organizations.

BILATERAL RELATIONS

Three international agreements have been signed regulating cooperation between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defense of the two countries, as well as visa-free travel for holders of diplomatic and service passports. At the same time, sharing the experience of reforms in the field of justice is an important area of ​​cooperation between Albania and Georgia.

We note a growing trend of political and diplomatic contacts also with other countries of this geopolitical area.

Albania supports the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia. Our country has always adhered to the position of the EU, expressing support for the security and stability of Georgia, based on full respect for its independence and territorial integrity. Albania does not recognize the “independence” of the self-proclaimed republics of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

According to DCM no. 858, dated 29.12.2021 “On determining the criteria, procedures and documentation for entry, stay and treatment of foreigners in the Republic of Albania”, Georgia is on the list of countries whose citizens enter visa-free in Albania, as a result of visa-free entry into the Schengen area.
