BILATERAL RELATIONS BETWEEN ALBANIA AND DENMARK

Denmark is a Nordic country in Northern Europe. It is bordered by the Baltic and North Seas in Northern Europe. Denmark lies to the southwest of Sweden and south of Norway, and is bordered to the south by Germany. Denmark has an area of about 42,924 km² and a population of around 5.6 million inhabitants. Its capital is Copenhagen and the official language is Danish.

The system of governance in Denmark is a parliamentary democracy. Denmark is a member state of the EU since January 1, 1973.

OVERVIEW

Diplomatic relations with the Kingdom of Denmark were established on May 29, 1970. Albania covers relations with Denmark by its Embassy in Copenhagen, while Denmark has no resident diplomatic representation in Albania, but carries diplomatic coverage through its Permanent Mission to Vienna.

BILATERAL RELATIONS

Bilateral relations with Denmark have intensified significantly in the recent years. Denmark has supported the democratic reforms undertaken in Albania and has financed many programs and projects for development, the most important one the support for the Albanian Ombudsman’s Institution. Denmark estimates the role of Albania in the Western Balkans as a stability factor and stresses the importance of the required reforms that will contribute directly to the economic development of Albania.

On July 8, 2020, former Acting Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Mr. Gent Cakaj paid an official visit to Denmark, which coincided also with the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. On September 2, 2021, the Danish MFA, Jeppe Kfod paid an official visit to Tirana, to confirm the full support of Denmark on opening negotiations talks with the EU and the holding of the First Intergovernmantal Conference.
