On April 27, 2022, at 3 pm (local time New York), Albania and France as two members of the Security Council, in cooperation with Ukraine, will organize a meeting in the Arria formula on the topic: ” Ensuring accountability for atrocities committed in Ukraine”.
This event is co-sponsored by members of the Security Council: USA, UK, Ireland and Norway as well as Australia, Belgium, Colombia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Montenegro, the Netherlands, Northern Macedonia, Poland, Slovakia, Sweden and the European Union.
Albania will be represented by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mrs. Olta Xhaçka, who will chair the meeting which is expected to last over 3 hours.
In the meeting are expected to report: Mrs. Michelle Bachelet, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights; Mr. Karim A.A.Khan, Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC); Attorney General of Ukraine Mrs. Irina Venediktova. In the meantime, members of the civil society will be represented by Mrs. Amaal Clooney representative of the Clooney Justice Foundation; Ms. Ida Sawyer, Director of Human Rights Watch.
The meeting will focus on discussions on accountability and the importance of documenting crimes committed in Ukraine after Russia’s aggression, as well as mobilizing the international community to assist international legal mechanisms, such as the International Criminal Court or the courts of specific countries to use universal jurisdiction to prevent impunity and to bring to justice those responsible for crimes against humanity committed in Ukraine.
This meeting comes a month after the establishment in the UN, in New York and Geneva, of the Group of Friends for Accountability after the Russian aggression, where Albania is co-chair.
