Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs

The UN Human Rights Council (HRC) replaced in 2006 the United Nations Commission on Human Rights (1946), reconciled with the Economic and Social Council, which was the main intergovernmental body of the United Nations, responsible for human rights.

The Human Rights Council, based in Geneva, is an inter-governmental body within the United Nations system made up of 47 States, which are elected by the UN General Assembly, responsible for the promotion and protection of all human rights around the globe. It has the ability to discuss all thematic human rights issues and situations that require its attention throughout the year.

International Human Rights Day is celebrated every year on December 10, the date that coincides with December 10, 1948, when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
