Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs

Acting Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Gent Cakaj made a visit to the Holy See.

This visit by Acting Minister Cakaj coincides with a number of very important anniversaries regarding the relations between Albania and the Holy See.

In a Facebook post Cakaj wrote that this September marks the 28th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, the 5th anniversary of Pope Francis’ visit to Tirana, and the 3rd anniversary of Mother Theresa’s Canonisation.

‘These events do not merely carry symbolic value: they represent a significant moment to remember the Albanians’ special heritage and unparalleled example, world-wide, regarding religious cohabitation, and religious harmony, as well as the open and far-reaching dialogue overall,’ Cakaj stated.

Additionally, as already underlined by Pope Francis in the course of his visit to Tirana, Cakaj pointed out that the Albanians are an integral part of the European historical and cultural family, and Albania will spare no effort ever to translate its European historical and cultural background into its political and institutional journey towards membership in the European Union.

As to Albania’s constant commitment to lobbying in favour of Kosovo’s recognition, Cakaj emphasised that ‘Albania is actively committed to ensuring recognition of Kosovo’s independence by the Holy See!’
