Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Ditmir Bushati attended today at UN headquarters the High-Level Meeting “Universal Declaration of Human Rights: A Prevention Tool to Achieve Peace and Sustainable Development.”

In his remarks, Minister Bushati said that Albania is committed to the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms, stressing that education, social inclusion, the fight against all forms of discrimination are important elements in strengthening peace, security and sustainable development.

“We have streamlined human rights in our diplomatic and political activity in our immediate region, Southeast Europe, in the context of our EU related reform agenda, as well as in the framework of international organizations. Diversity is an integral part and a source of enrichment in our society,” said Minister Bushati.

The Minister further added that human rights, including minority rights can only be ensured in a society where dialogue, understanding and cultural diversity are viewed as source of enrichment.

Albania has taken the initiative to implement goal 16 of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, regarding good governance, rule of law, and strong democratic institutions. “We made gender representation and budgeting a priority, which sets us as an example for gender equality in the region and beyond” said Minister Bushati.

“Albania’s legal framework and political action in relation to the protection of minority rights are fully in line with the most advanced European and international practice in this area,” concluded the Minister.

The High-Level Event “Universal Declaration of Human Rights: A Preventive Tool to achieve Peace and Sustainable Development” was held at the ministerial level and this year coincided with the 70th anniversary of the Declaration.

Meanwhile, during the proceedings of the UN General Assembly, Minister Bushati held several bilateral meetings.

Minister Bushati discussed with OSCE Secretary General Thomas Greminger on the recent developments in security issues and mutual crisis management. Both officials agreed on the necessity to deepen cooperation between Albania and the OSCE on the common challenges ahead.
