On March 2, 2020, bilateral diplomatic consultations with Spain took place in Madrid. The Albanian delegation was led by the Deputy Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Mr. Sokol Dedja.

Albania’s progress on the EU path and in particular the opening of accession negotiations, bilateral cooperation issues, regional cooperation and within multilateral organizations were raised at the consultations.

Deputy Minister Dedja presented substantive results in key reforms of the integration process. These results were certified today by the European Commission’s interim report, which reflects substantial achievements and reiterates the recommendation to open accession negotiations with Albania immediately.

The Spanish side praised the progress of the reforms undertaken by the Albanian government, and expressed support for Albania’s progress on the EU path based on merit and meeting the set criteria.

The parties appreciated the bilateral cooperation in the political, economic, consular and cultural fields and agreed to continue contacts to bring these relations to a higher level.

The Spanish side praised Albania’s role as OSCE Chairperson, as well as the constructive role in regional cooperation among the Western Balkan countries.
